Suzie Thomas Biography

Suzie Thomas has always loved art and has been creating artwork since she was a child. A
talented and gifted student, Thomas skipped the eighth grade and, at the young age of sixteen,
began her education at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where she studied fine art
with an emphasis on painting. Thomas made her first sale to Nationwide Insurance while she
was still in art school. The landscape painting hangs in the lobby of the Nationwide Insurance
headquarters in Portland.

An adventurer by nature, Thomas moved to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands solo, after she
graduated from college, where she became a freelance chef on chartered yachts. During her stay
in the Caribbean, Thomas met a fellow sailor and adventurer who is now her husband. Together,
they sailed through the Caribbean, spent time in Oregon while her partner went to culinary
school, managed a private estate in Southampton and owned a restaurant and bakery in Utah.
They finally settled down in her husband's hometown, Sonora, California, where Thomas is able
to focus on her art. Thomas’s studio is in the historic California bungalow that they call home.

Suzie Thomas loves the California landscape and sunshine. A full-time artist, Thomas’s current
adventures take her into the California countryside to paint landscapes. Thomas finds the
majestic scenery in Yosemite and the Sierra Foothills especially inspirational. A wine aficionado,
Thomas also enjoys painting vineyards and wine-themed still lifes. Thomas’s artwork has been
shown in galleries, festivals, wineries and juried shows throughout Northern California, as well
as private collections from coast to coast.

Although she works in a variety of mediums, Suzie Thomas is currently focusing on landscape
and still life painting in oils. Thomas renders these traditional subjects in positively untraditional
ways. Thomas’s artwork is alive with bold brush strokes and vibrant, saturated colors, which she
credits to the time she spent with her mentor, Sigrid Burton, a well-known abstract painter who,
in-turn, studied under Helen Frankenthaller, the foremost lyrical colorist of her generation.
Suzie Thomas is proud to be part of this prestigious lineage of great, American, women artists
and strives to continue the tradition.
